The physical conditioning really helped me, not only in class but outside as well. I gained a lot of strength in a short amount of time, and when one practices the correct mechanics of movements, you can take this to other spaces of your life – now my body demands on its own that I use it differently. The other part of the class that has more to do with martial arts – something I had never tried – helped me to release tension. I leave relaxed. I'm happier. It helps me to drain the frustration, anger and all those tensions that one gathers in work and daily life. There's something about this practice that requires you to be very present. It demands that you inhabit yourself completely: in your body, with the mind concentrated and the emotions calm.

Towards the end of my 30s, I began to feel some pain in my upper back and began to train with Bruno for this reason. We realized that I needed to improve my muscle conditioning overall. Now that I've been practicing for 2 years, I feel more solid, more structured and better prepared to take on everyday movements and work without discomfort. The practice has benefited me in so many ways, physical as well as mental. I enjoy just taking things a lot slower and quieter, and I enjoy that that's so unfamiliar to me. The slowing down has helped calm me more, it's been great for de-stressing but it's also given me the opportunity to look a little deeper. I was in pretty poor physical condition, with the pandemic and everything, and since I started training with Bruno I feel like I've gained much more strength in my body, not only during the training but in my daily life – whether it's lifting something or carrying my baby. I also really like the combination of activities in each class, which makes the time fly. When we practice throwing punches and kicks I gain a lot in terms of concentration and being present. It's a sort of meditation, because if you get distracted, you realize it immediately.

I've been in martial arts my whole life, but I broke my back in Aikido and had to stop. I was always interested in tai chi but never found a good teacher until Bruno. I love the form because you can really zone out of your daily life and go deep inside. It's not just the form but also the meditation, the stillness, the breathing, the chi kung. I've been to lots of trainers and martial arts instructors but when something happened they just put a bandage on it. Bruno goes to the root of the problem to first heal that. Bruno really knows the body, he listens and looks and knows exactly what to do. He has a gift.

When I first started training with Bruno over a year ago, I was just coming out of the hospital for a serious lung infection. I had trouble breathing and could barely move my left arm. I decided that I wanted to take up something slow and meditative to help with my recovery. I researched tai chi and knew about its health and mental benefits, so I reached out to a few online teachers and resonated the most with Bruno. When we had our first class, I was less than two weeks out of the hospital and weighed 110 pounds. In the beginning we combined the tai chi with some strength training and now I’m back to 165 pounds and I have full use of my left arm. I’ve really enjoyed the combination of a martial art with a slower, meditative aspect that grows with the discipline of daily practice. I love Bruno’s teaching style, his body of knowledge, and the way he breaks everything down with patience. I’ve finished training the entire empty hand form and now I’m learning the saber. Being able to learn online is also convenient; I travel a lot and I’ve been able to keep up with my classes from all over the world.

I really benefit from the idea of being methodical in the use of my body, and from learning to use strength and moving in a more graduated and correct way, without pain – instead of moving incorrectly, with pain. When I started I had a lot of pain in my hip and Bruno gave me tools to be able to move better with that pain, so that it was easier to bear. Now I note that I have more strength, I get tired less easily, and I can do things that I couldn't before. I always tried to exercise, but had a hard time sustaining it in a gym. Here, on the other hand, the training is very personalized, the atmosphere is pleasant and the exercise circuits have variety and rhythm. As if this weren't enough, Bruno offers a monthly talk where we focus on a specific objective of mine – it's a different therapy from psychology but a good complement to the exercise. All this helps me to develop the habit of caring for my body, and in large part this has to do with finding someone like Bruno who pays attention and invests great effort into this.

My practice with Bruno has been a gift. It’s been a little over three months now and I’m completely changed. Covid was difficult for everybody and I just let go of my physical health, so I am getting back to feeling like I’m in one piece again. And because I’m getting older, it's even more important that I do that now.I'm feeling more secure on the ground than I've been for years now. It’s been nine years since I had a complete ankle replacement, and my balance got really bad, which is why I really appreciate what’s happening with Bruno because I’m getting some assurance that I can walk without the cane. When I was young I did a lot of dance, and it feels so good to start using my muscles again.Honestly, it’s one of my favorite moments of the week. Bruno is so good at explaining every movement in detail. He’s very meticulous and conscientious, because he knows that if you do it correctly, the benefits will be much greater. I also know about his background in Chinese and Japanese martial arts, and those are the best.
